The Adventures of Toby hit the bookshelves

Bible stories can sometimes be difficult for modern children to relate to, but take those stories and give them a modern twist, and they become a whole lot more appealing.

That’s the thought behind the DVD series, The Adventures of Toby, which has been extended into books. Two new Toby adventures, this time in book form, have now been launched.

Candice Argall, the brain behind the Toby series, says that Marshmallows and Cockroaches was inspired by a cockroach infestation in their kitchen. “In the book, Toby is shocked to discover his heart is full of cockroaches,” she says. “He has to learn how to use a goo transformer – which turns hate into love – with the help of his best friend, Jesus, and soon he’s living in marshmallowland instead.”

In Amazing Grapes, Toby learns to let go of his pre-conceptions about someone and allows God to show him who that person really is – the way God sees them. And all because Toby loses his friend’s ball in his neighbour’s yard: the scary neighbour, the one they call the Butcher…

Argall has made every effort to ensure Toby is someone kids can relate to. He comes from a broken home, he fights with his elder sister, and he has a keen sense of adventure. He makes the kinds of mistakes we all make, but with his best friend, Jesus, by his side, he learns a lot about life, God and other people.

The books feature bright, modern illustrations that will delight children of all ages, and at the end of each story, a short Bible story brings the lesson Toby learned into sharp focus.

The books are available in English and Afrikaans at R85 each, at Exclusive Books or e-mail candice@adventuresoftoby.com to find a stockist near you.
